I am having a issue with files not being backed up in backup exec 12.5. The files all seem to be registered with VSS, but VSS reports no errors, and backup exec reports successful backups. Here is a description of the problem with an example file (oracle.exe) but the problem is not limited to this file.
If I run a backup job for d:\oracle\ora11g\bin\oracle.exe the backup job runs successfully and verifies, but the file is never backed up. It is also not available in restore selection lists. The job actually runs and backups 892 bytes. Which is the size of the empty folders. The actual file is 111 MB. The problem is not related to the file being open, it also fails when the oracle service is shutdown. Moving the file to another directory allows backups and restores to work as expected.
All of the files that are affected seem to be registered with VSS. For kicks I attempted a system state restore to see if the files were bundled in that portion of the backup. This was not the case. There Is a XML file in the log directory for the local agent that has entries for all the files in question.
My Environment
This XML file seems to capture all of the files not being backed up. (I have not verified every file, there are 100's but my spot check seems to indicate this is accurate)
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\RAWS\logs\{E8132975-6F93-4464-A53E-1050253AE220} - System Writer.xml
This files seems to be used for restores, the entries look like this. (This is a single sample)
<FILE_LIST path="d:\oracle\ora11g\bin" filespec="oracle.exe" filespecBackupType="3855" />

The above mentioned issue has been fixed by a way of a Service Pack for Backup Exec for Windows Servers version 12.5 build 2213. Please refer the Related Documents section for more information about the hotfix.

I do not believe this is the case. oracle.exe does not fit that profile. Again all the files seem to be system files that essential for operation. I also have Service Pack 4 with current hot fixes installed. The document mentions installing SP2.

If the file are intended to be backed up in the system state then they won't be backed up by a C: (file system backup) as part of Active File Exclusion
For instance on a Windows 2008 system, the SQLSERVR.EXE and SQLAGENT.EXE files that should be located in the .....\MSSQL\BINN folder are not backed up by a file system backup (with no skipped messages) but are present in the system state backup.
As such if Oracle.exe is registered as part of the system state it probably is subject to active file exclusion and will not report as skipped..

I restored the system state. That file was not included in the restore. So to the best of my knowledge BE is reporting all files backed up, when it is not the case.

Dear all,
We also come across the same problem.
[Environment]
<Media Server>
Windows 2008 SE SP2 x64
Backup Exec :2010
<The affected remote server>
Windows2008 SP2 x64
Database: Oracle RDBMS 11.2
AOFO option is always ON ,though it is not specified..
Before backup, oracle instance is shut down and service is stopped via pre-exec script.
In other words, oracle.exe file is offline condition.
On the other hand, problem doesn't occur under following condition
<The affected remote server>
Windows2008 SP2 x64
Database: Oracle RDBMS 10.2
I think that it is serious problem because BackupExec cannot complete a simple file backup
without problem, though it is BASIC function.
Is there any way how to fix this stupid problem ?
Best Regards,
