Backup Lotus Notes-Databases without Domino-Agent?

Hi,

actually I'm not able to use our Domino-Agent (see https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=103&message.id=57926&query.id=12456#M57926). Because I'm waiting for an answer of Symantec now for more than three weeks (!) I tried to backup the database-files (.ntf, .nsf, .box). And - surprise! - I backuped every one of the databases although I didn't stop the notes-service.

I'm very confused now: If I can backup the files in this way why should I use the Domino-Agent?? And I'm shure that the backup of the database-files failed some time ago when we used older versions of Veritas and Domino. We migrated to Domino-server 6.5. Could this be the reason that I can backup the database-files while the Domino-service running?

We use the Veritas 10d SP4 and Lotus Domino 6.5 both running on Windows Server 2003.
