Backup/Restore a VM Without it's independent disks

Here is my situation:

I have a vmware cluster with 3 hosts and 3 SANs.  I created a SUSE Linux vm that was a total of about 2 TB.  There are 6 hard disks associated with this vm.  Initially, all 6 disks were part of the vm.  I have changed 5 of the disks to be independent disks.  My goal is to backup/restore the entire vm WITHOUT the independent disks.  I can successfully backup this single disk vm using Backup Exec 2010, by "excluding" all the independent disks,   When I try to restore this vm (the backup is around 50gb) the vcenter server says not enough space on the volume even though that volume has over 800 gb free.  My guess is that either vmware or BE believes the independent disks are still part of the vm, which bring would bring it up to 2TB which is too large for the 800GB volume.  The error from BE is:

0xe00095a4 - The operation failed because the virtual center or ESX server reported a problem creating or accessing one or more files needed.

Thank you,

Mike R

Ensure GRT option is not selected under VMWare tab in the backup job...
