Backup exec 11d

Flexin
Not applicable

We are running backup exec 11d accross multiple servers.

The remote servers have the agent installed.

Recently a few of the servers stoped baking up with the the error 8004230f. now i have read that this is the vss service on the remote machine so i have started the service on the local machines, whilst there i noticed the remote agent was corrupt and wouldn't link with the main server so i have repaired this as well.

These servers are still not backing up with the same error i have looked through the services on the remote machines and it is ruuning I am at a loss where to go next.

Any ideas appreciated

John

If the backup job is set to use the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider and is still getting the error, ensure that the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service is set to a start type of either Manual or Automatic.  This error will be generated if the service is set to Disabled.

Run the following cmd

VSS list writers

Make sure the state of all the writers is stable

if any writer is failed try installing the VSS patches available and rebooting the server .

Hi John,

VSS fails for many reason and something it is not obvious as to what they are. I would suggest starting from the most basic troubleshooting steps since there are no OS / Hardware mentioned I would just assume that you are using Windows 2003 even before you should look at the BE you should really look at your OS first until you can use VSS on the OS you are at a lost.

1. Enable shadow copying on a drive are you able to do a snapshot with the Windows snapshot? You can read the microsoft article there. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785914%28WS.10%29.aspx

2. what do you see when you issue the following command? "vssadmin list providers" and "vssadmin list writers" are there any errors? If  you get errors a restart normally fix your issue.

3. Do you have any AV / Firewall software installed? You can check to see which filter drivers are loaded by executing the following command in the command prompt "fltmc" if you are having anything apart from the microsoft default it is worth removing them and try again.

4. Are there any udpates from Windows for your VSS version?

I hope this will get you on the way because troubleshooting VSS is a real pain.
