Backup only uses tape drive once

Hi there,

We have an issue at a client site where the backup will on ly use the tape drive the first time the backup is run. After this it rolls over to the 'Backup-to-disk' even if we replace the tape. If we restart the 'Device and Media' service it will always backup to the tape first time.

We have applied Service Pack 2 for 9.1 and this has not resolved the issue. We have also checked the priority order for the Tape and 'Backup to folder' and the tape has higher priority.

Tape drive is a DLT using the Veritas drivers and the server is running a fully servicepacked Windows 2003 standard edition.

While configuring the backup job in "Device and Media" option in the destination device are you selecting "All devices"?

Is the job set to "Overwrite Media"?
How is your overwrite protection?

Maybe it's deciding the tape should not be overwritten, and falling back on the disk.

Hi there,

The backup is currently configured for all devices. The post below suggested that it may be Overwrite protection but this is currently configured for None.

It seems strange that it will backup to tape first time, everytime you restart the Device and Media service.

As you have selected the destination for the device as "All devices" we suggest you to select the particular drive on which you want to take the backup.

-- Also we recommend you to use Overwrite protection level as "Partial".
