Has anyone had success with using writable CDs or DVDs as backup media for BE? I understand from sales that version 10 supports these devices "as long as the OS does". Is it so?

I have not tried to do it in the 10 version but It works in 9.1.
However I suppose there are no changes in the 10 version.

You must install third party driver that do write to CD-RW/DVD-RW. Often this driver is delivered with a CD-RW/DVD-RW drive. When this driver is installed you see new drive letter and can do "transparent" write directly from your OS. In other words you can work with CD-RW/DVD-RW as with hard disk from your OS.

After that you must create removable backup-to-disk folder and point to drive letter that created by the third party driver.

Do you know if there is official Doc from veritas regarding this matter.

Backup Exec for Windows server (BEWS) v10.0 supports the backing up of data on CD R-W and DVD-RW .

You have to create removable backup-to-disk folders on any removable device, provided the device appears as a drive letter and is formatted with a file system.

Removable devices can include CDR, CDR-W, DVD-R, DVD-RW , ZIP, JAZZ and Removable hard disk.

Note :For CDR, CDR-W, DVD-R, and DVD-RW, third-party software must be used to format the media with a file system before it can be used with Backup Exec.

VERITAS Backup Exec 9.x/10.X for Windows Servers adds a new feature called "Removable Backup to Disk Folder." This folder supports directing backup jobs to the following removable media:

1. CD-R
2. CD-RW
3. Digital video disc - recordable (DVD-R)
4. Digital video disc - rewritable (DVD-RW)
5. ZIP
6. JAZZ
7. Removable Hard Disk ( REV drives fall under this category)

You may check the HCL list for its compatibility

Unfortunately, I can't found any clear official document about this feature (except a short piece in the admin guide). But it works - I have tested it...
