Backup to disk not online or near

I am trying to use Backup to Disk folders on a Windows server 2000. I have 6 external USB 300GB backup hard drives that are mapped to a path on the C drive c:\backup\monday, c:\backup\tuesday ...) using the windows disk management mmc console. They also have drive letters attached, but I don't want to use them in case the drive letters change if a drive gets powered down and then back up.

I can create the backup to disk folder in Backup Exec (non-removable), but when I try to run a job, it always fails saying the media is not online or nearline. No appendable/overwriteable media found. I can inventory the folder fine. The physical drives/folders are working fine. I can add files to them. Backup Exec does create its files in the folders when I create them such as "changer.cfg" and "folder.cfg".

Are you getting errors in the application or system event log?
