Backup using BackupExec through Virtual Server to Tape Drive

karant
Not applicable

We have one server HP ProLiant GL360 in production which is running all roles in Windows Server 2008 and planned to the virutalisation using XenServer. We do the backup using a different backup program to the tape drive (HP StorageWorks) through SCSI interface.

My question, If I buy BackupExec 2010 latest version, is it possible to run the BackupExec in Windows Guest OS to run the backup to tape drive through XenServer?

* because the hardware is not directly connected to guest os and it has to work through xenserver.

Your configuration is not tested and hence not supported.  Even if you do managed to get it to work, you would have problem getting help from Symantec when you get into trouble.  It is recommended that you use a physical media server, especially when you need to access a tape drive.

As said, this is not supported.

Don't you have a fysical machine (it is recommended to have at least one fysical domain controller) to install Backup Exec on it and connect the tape drive ?
