Burn Hard Drive Backups to DVD

Currently using BE 10 w/ Exchange Client to backup Exchange 5.5 on a Win2k Server. Backing up to external hard drive. Question is can I burn the file to a DVD without corrupting it in any way or losing my ability to restore from it. And then if the hard drive fails, can I copy the data from the DVD to a new external hard drive and restore from it?
