Cannot detect tape in drive

Hi all,

I am running BackupExec 10.0 on Windows 2003 Server.
The hardware is DELL PowerEdge 2850 with PowerVault LTO-1 drive.

When I inserted the LTO tape in the drive and looked at Device, I could not see any tape. Also, when I am in the Device tab, the only option available is just Eject. I cannot media label the machine.

Wndows did not report any hardware problem. That's weird.

Did I do anything wrong?

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Verify if the device is detected by Windows.
Please note that if the device is not detected by operating system then Backup exec will not detect it.

-- Also verify if there are event id's 7,9,11 and 15 are occured in the system event logs.

-- Verify if the device is comaptible with the Backup Exec

If the device is comaptible, install the latest Veritas device drivers:
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/275676.htm

And verify the result.

Please update us on this issue.

I am pretty sure that the tape drive is compatible.

The funny thing is: BE was able to recognize the tape after I rebooted the server.

However, after I labed the tape and ejected the tape out and put it back again, BE failed to recognize the tape again.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

- Does Backup exec display the previous media in the drive?
- Try running and inventory and verify the results.

Oh ho! The mighty Backup Exec rears it's ugly head again! John you are not alone mate, I've got several servers here running on v10 build 5520 that are exhibiting the same symptoms. Backup Exec can see the drives okay, and can see a tape in them no problem. And then come back a bit later and whooops the tapes no longer 'in the drive'. Found you can restart the Backup Exec Device & Media Service (and thus the Job Engine and the Backup Exec Server Service that are dependent on them) and it'll find the tapes again but there's no way I'm doing that every day.

This is on external Compaq 100Gb SDLT drives.

Had been fine right through v8.6, v9 and v10 till when I 'upgraded' to build 5520.

John, did you solve your problem? Am still finding my drives are losing the tapes in them.
