Catalog Problems - 0xe0000900

Hello.

Since one week we have a problem to run a catalog on several media located on a RAID5 subsystem. We have 42 media located on the subsystem (files limited to 50GB) but only 4 of them work fine (8, 20, 39 and 42). The whole rest gives the following error:

0xe0000900 - The requested media is not listed in the media index
and could not be mounted. To add the media's catalog information
to the disk-based catalogs, run an inventory operation on the media
and resubmit the catalog operation.

Then we tried to solve the problem following this method:

1. Open up the Windows Services applet, and stop all Backup Exec
 services.
2. Rename the C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Catalogs folder
to Catalogs_old, and recreate a new Catalogs folder.
3. Restart the Backup Exec services.
4.   In Backup Exec, go to Tools|Options and click on the Catalog
 setting.
5. Uncheck the "Use storage media-based catalogs" box.
6. Run the catalog of the tape again.

 But it did not help!!!

Can anyone help??? We are pretty helpless here...

Greetings,
Michael

Michael,

Normally when I run across this with backup to disk files it is because some of the backups spanned multiple bkf files and then one of those bkf files was overwriten by another job.

If you are trying to restore from a specific job one thing you can do is check that job specifically and see witch bkf files were used.  Place those specific files in a backup to disk location by themselves and try to run the catalog again.  You can also try cataloging each one of the files by themselves, with that file being the only one in the backup up to disk location.

Another thing you may want to check is other jobs that run around the same time as the one you are trying to restore from to see if they possibly overwrote one of the bkf files.

We managed to get rid of the problem by deleting all "dead" entries under "Show selection details" under the specific job setting...

Now the backup runs without problems...

I expect if we would catalog again the "dead" entries would appear again. So now we are hoping that they disapear sometimes...

Greetings,
Michael
