I looked in to this a while back for disaster recovery purposes, and my conclusions were that you could do two things:
  1. If you have one online BE server, and one offline BE server, remove any catalogs from the offline server, then replicate the files over from active to passive. Then, when you need to use the second server, stop replication, then when you start the BE services on the second server, the catlogs will be rebuilt.
Not that I didn't test this to any great extent, and I'm sure it would be unsupported.
  2. If you have two online BE servers, use the CASO option. Set the catalogs to replicated mode. This will be supported, but will cost money.

Thanks Hywel for the response...

How do I go about replicating the files from active to passive?

As textbooks often say, that's left as an exercise for the reader ;)
You could try DFS and FRS (which I haven't really used, but are free), or have a look at Veritas Replication Exec (which isn't cheap, but seems really good). Replication Exec can't co-exist with BE CPS though.
Alternatively you might be able to simply have a simple batch file run on a schedule.
