Clarity needed..(before i jump)..How to move jobs, catalogs, etc. from one server to another..

Stamford_Rob
Not applicable
all..

i have been reading the forums for an answer and i think i have found that it cannot be done but want to make sure.. i want to copy all jobs, catalogs, etc from one BE 10d server to a new BE 11d server.. from what i have read is that i had to upgrade my current 10d to 11d then copy to the new server..  all being inthe same structure.. BUT.. this is what i have (or inherited).. i have an older BE server that has 10d on it all on c:.. i have a new 2k3 server with BE 11d and an extended array hanging off it .. no possibility of being the same structure..

with that said.. is it possible to move the jobs, catalogs, etc to the new server..

thanks..

Hi Rob,

Being in the same structure is not necessary.

What is the main thing is the versions.  If it is possible to bring the 10d server to the same version as the 11d server then you can simply copy the catalogs over and run a "copy database" and have everything.

If that upgrade is not possible, you can attempt to run a "copy server configuration" from BEutility and then import the config file.  This will include your jobs and media set information.

Please let me know if that answers your questions.

Is there a tech note that outlines this procedure ?

I am gettting ready to do just what you described.

My currenty media server is having some problems and I need to replace it.

My current media server is 11d build 7170, so would I just build and new machine with 11d 7170 on it, and then I can somehow copy all of my catalogs and database from the old server to the new one ?

Thanks

David,

Yes, here is the technote:

Please review it and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the technote.

I have a few questions, it says in this technote, that the computers have to be named the same ?

Here is the first sentence in the technote:

Copy Database allows to copy an Existing Backup Exec Database from a computer using a specific name
to another computer using the same name.

I interpret this as this, my current media server is named dev, the new media server will also have to be
named dev ? If this is true, how do I get 2 computers to be named the same thing in my Active Directory domain ?

The technote goes on to say that if they aren't named the same that some database data will be lost.

What database data will be lost ?

To copy the catalogs, do I just stop the services on both computers, copy the catalogs,
and then restart the services ?

David,

I will look into the wording on that technote.

In my experience, you will not lose anything and the server names do not have to be the same.
The process takes care of the new server name.

Yes, you can copy the catalog files from the one server to the other with the services stopped.

Ok, I guess I need some clarification as to how this properly works.

In Step 1 of the technote (286093) it tells me to run the BEUtility.exe
On which computer do I run this utility (old server, new server)?

I have this situation, my current media server (dev) is the one I want
to copy from. My new media server (mailtemp) is the one I want to copy to.
So do I run the BEUtility.exe from (dev) or from (mailtemp) ?

Also in Step 1 of the technote (286093) it tells me to right click on
All Media Servers and click New Media Server and Add the new Backup Exec
Server Name. So which media server am I selecting in this part of the step ?
the old one (dev) or the new one (mailtemp) ?

In Step 3 of the technote (286093) it tells me to select the database file.
Is this file named bedb_dat.mdf ?

In Step 4 of the technote (286093) it tells me to select the log file.
Is this file name bedb_dat.ldf ?

Here is what I have tried.

Attempt 1
-----------
From the new Media server called MailTemp, I ran the BEUtility.exe
I added the old media server called dev to the All Media Servers.

I selected the new Media server (mailtemp) and did a right click -> Copy Database.
In Steps 3 and 4 I selected the files (bedb_dat.mdf and bedb_dat.ldf) from
the old media server (dev). Once the copy was complete I rebooted the new
media server (mailtemp). Once the reboot was complete I went to the
administrator console on mailtemp and did not see any of the information
that I expected (job definitions, scheduled jobs).

Since this didn't work, I tried the following:

Attempt 2
----------
From the New Media server called MailTemp, I ran the BEUtility.exe
I added the old media server called dev to the All Media Servers.

I selected the old Media server (dev) and did a right click->Copy Database.
In Steps 3 and 4 I selected the files (bedb_dat.mdf and bedb_dat.ldf) from the
old media server (dev).  Once the copy was complete I rebooted the new
media server (mailtemp). Once the reboot was complete I went to the
administrator console on mailtemp and did not see any of the information
that I expected (job definitions, scheduled jobs).

Since this didn't work, I tried the following:

Attemtp 3
-----------
From the old Media server called dev, I ran the BEUtility.exe
I added the new media server called mailtemp to the All Media Servers.

I selected the new Media server (mailtemp) and did a right click->Copy Database.

Please advise on what I am doing wrong or let me know if this technote
is still valid ?

Basically what I am wanting to do is this, I have an existing media server (dev).
I have a new media server (Mailtemp). I want to copy the database from (dev) to
(MailTemp) and have all of my scheduled jobs, job definitions, media sets on the
new media server (Mailtemp)

Any update as to how to copy the database from one media server to another ?
