Does verify check against the original file

Does the verify option on a backup-to-disk device check against the original file or does it just check that the backup can be read? With a tape system, think it just makes sure the tape is readable.

Just want to know whether the verify operation has locks on the files it's verifying.

Verify reads the backed up data, computes checksums and compares them to checksums stored on the backup media.  if they match, the verify is successful
