Well you could use backup exec to encrypt the data and protect it from being usable after it is stolen ;) !
BEWS has the following option while setting up the backup:
Media Protection
Password protect media
Select this option if you are overwriting the media and you want to protect it. When the Enter Password dialog box appears, enter a media password. When a password-protected media is taken to another location, such as another media server, the password is required to catalog the tape.
The Media written are in an encrypted format, but it could be read using backup exec. But to further protect your media even after encrypting your data, you will have to always "password protect" your backup media.
