Error Starting backup Exec 2010 R2 Services.

Ahsan
Level 3

We have installed Symantec BAckup Exec 2010 R2 on Windows 2008 Server.

Everything was working fine until suddenly the services now fails to start.

Tried rebooting but did not solve the problem.

There are 3 services which fails to start.pls see the below logs for those 3 services.

Starting Backup Exec Server on BACKUPSVR-WH.
Error starting the service Backup Exec Server on BACKUPSVR-WH.  Error code returned:
The process terminated unexpectedly.

Starting Backup Exec Job Engine on BACKUPSVR-WH.
Error starting the service Backup Exec Job Engine on BACKUPSVR-WH.
The dependency service or group failed to start.

Starting Backup Exec Agent Browser on BACKUPSVR-WH.
Error starting the service Backup Exec Agent Browser on BACKUPSVR-WH.
The dependency service or group failed to start.

Symantec Backup Exec is a dependency service for job engine and agent browser, hence those two are not starting unless the exec server is starting.

the server is in domain using admin credentials.

googled the error but could not found much

any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Ahsan

Everyday BE runs a database maintenance and creates a backup of the BE database. Try to reload

the last good database.

Open BEutility.exe->right click on the media server->Recover database->select drop existing

database and reload from backup.

Note: Do make a copy of the data folder before performing the above step

What is the status of the BE device and media service?

Check the event viewer for any error message related to services.

Is your Backup Exec database server up and running ?
(normally it is an SQLExpress instance on the Backup Exec Media server).

BE device and media service is started. No as such there are no events logged except for the service has stopped.

All the SQL services are running.

Also Symantec backup exec management service is also stopped.

Run Live update or Make sure you install the following hotfix

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH128298

re-enter the service account information for the backup exec services and try starting the services again .

Could you please post the event Which you getting when you try to start the server service ?

Open a Command window to the Backup Exec (BE) path and type: beserver -console
Let us know what error you get when you run the above command.

...best way to do this is to use BEutility.exe and change the serice details there, also making sure the account isn't locked out for whatever reason (I have seen this cause services to not start up!).

and if need be, repair your BEDB using BEutlity.exe which is a non-intrusive way of checking for, and repairing any issues with it.

...it isn't part of Backup Exec's core product...do a search in the installation directory for BEutility.exe and you'll find it there...

Check the followig document

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH20486

Go to following registry path and rename the preFirstrun key to old

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail

there is no prefirstrun key as described.

...try running a repair of the actual installation. During this it's going to ask you for the service credentials again.

Have you made sure that the account isn't locked out?

Everyday BE runs a database maintenance and creates a backup of the BE database. Try to reload

the last good database.

Open BEutility.exe->right click on the media server->Recover database->select drop existing

database and reload from backup.

Note: Do make a copy of the data folder before performing the above step

Give full permission on the CRF key @ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\CRF  and try starting the services again. Incase if this does not work Reloading the database from Base is the only option to resolve. as Suggested by AmolZerocool.
