Error "Media is bad" yet restore successful

Recently, I have been getting this error message "Media is bad" and always get a couple of failed backups. Under my supervisor's suggestion, I tried to selectively restore the failed backups by picking several random files on each of the servers and the result was a success.

Also, the same media that was reported to be faulty is also used in the backup of another server, which result in a success. Could it be that only certain parts of the tape is bad so both failed and successed backups can happen on the very same tape?

I'd like to know if I should try a full restore the failed backups to further test it. If the full restore turns out to be successful, is that conclusive to say the error message is in fact false positive? The tapes my company uses are only about 1 year old. We are using Symantec Backup Exec 10.1 Rev. 5629

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Click on "Tools" > "Options" > "Catalog".
Uncheck the option "Use storage media based catalogs" and try slow catlogging the tape.
