Error running a Repair on Back Up Exec 12

Tinkin

Hi,

I have a windows server 2003 with Backup Exec 12 running, this stopped responding two days ago where the Jobs were hanging when running an Inventory on a tape.

I've fiddled around with this and changed some things in registry key that i read and i've made it worse.

Now the following services will not start

Backup Exec Agent Browser

Backup Exec Job Engine

Backup Exec Server

I've tried to run a repair and get the following error code V-225-131

When reading up on this, i believe this means my database is full, So i tried running BEUtility to add a new database and get the following error

'New Backup Exec Database Location
Failed to access the registry keys of selected server TOUCH-BACKUP to get the Backup Exec version numbers.
Operation to change location of Backup Exec database to SQL Server instance TOUCH-BACKUP ended with errors.'

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this up and working again??

Thanks,

Wai

Open BEutility and reload database from backup. Refer to below link

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH65053

Everyday BE runs a database maintenance and create a backup of BEDB in the form of BEDB.bak

Hi,

Thanks for the response however this did not resolve the issue, when restarting Back up Exec it prompts me for username and password which i put in but Back up Exec Server service still won't start.

Additional point - not sure if this is relevant, but in BEUtility when i select All Media Servers and my backup server is listed, there is a blue question mark on it.

Status, decription, version, serial number is all UNKNOWN.

I'm concerned i deleted this in the registry..? any ideas?

Thanks,

Wai

Check the account used by all the BE services.

Re-enter password for all the services.

Services need to be started in below sequence

1) SQL server BKUPEXEC service (configured with Local admin account)

2) BE Device and Media Server (Configured with Domain admin account BESA)

3) BE Server Service ( Domain admin)

4) BE Job Engine (Domain Admin)

5) BE Remote Agent (Local Admin account)

6) BE Agent Browser ( Domain Admin)

Hi,

Have done the above but service fails to start on BE Server Service

Error - The Backup Exec Server Service on Local Compter started then Stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the performance logs and alerts service.

BE Job Engine error - Error 1068: The dependancy service or group failed to start same for BE Agent browser and they both use Backup Exec Server service as a dependancy.

Thanks for your help :)

Hi,

I have done the above however BE Server service doesnt start with error

'The Backup Exec Server Service on Local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example the Performance Logs and Alert service'

Then Job Engine and Agent Browser fail to start - Error

' Could not start on local computer, Error 1608: The dependency server or group failed to start'

Both these use BE Server service as a dependency.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Not sure if you got my last two messages, but the BE Server service won't start making the Job Engine and Agent browser unable to start too as they have dependancy's on the BE Server Service.

Could you please post the error message from the event viewer for the server service.

You're amazing!! that has fixed the problem with not being able to open my Backup Exec..however i'm back to my original problem where i try to inventory a tape or erase and it just sits on 'running' and normally there is a green play sign on the tape when in use, but its not there and just hangs and i have to restart all the services again to clear off the cancel, as a cancel doesn't do anything either.

In fear of making it worse like i did before!...do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Wai

Few pointers to fix the issue.

1) Check the alerts tab for any active alerts.

2) install Symantec drivers for the tape drive.

3) Check Windows event viewer for any errors related to the hardware (event id's like 7,9,11)

4) Perform powercyle of the server and the tape library

Tried all - but no success, i get this in the event log

The device, \Device\Tape1, is not ready for access yet.

and

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\adpu160m2.

Still no joy, i tried this, originally they were not digitally signed to Symantec but got that right now, but still just says queued when i do anything with the tape devices. Nothing in the alerts...

Disable and delete the tape drive from the BE console and then restart all the BE services.

Also let us know the make and model of the tape device.
