Exchange Server BU fails because "Exchange Store service is not responding"

Older compaq server running WinNT4 server with Veritas Backup Exec server edition 8.60 rev 3808 with "Agent for MS Exchange 2000 Server" installed.

This setup has been working flawlessly for a long time. Now, however, it is failing each time. The job log entry is:
The Exchange Store service is not responding. Backup set canceled.
^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Since this bu job is set to only bu the exchange server, it fails after only 40-50 seconds of running.

I am able to change tapes ok, inventory, erase, etc; I am able to set up and successfully bu other data, just not the exchange server. We recently had to reboot the server to restore contact with the tape bu device but as you can see it appears to be working fine again.

I checked and all of the exchange server services are running. I restarted all of them. But still no good backup.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I may further troubleshoot this issue?

Would uninstalling/reinstalling the current bu exec 8.6 software restore the exchange server bu?

Would perhaps upgrading to bu exec ver 9.x fix the problem?

Is there an update/service pack I might need to install?

I also have the same problem, and have been unable to find any suitable cure. Any solutions would be very helpful.
