How to FULLY delete BE 8.x Services

Lee_Davila
Level 3

We've uninstalled an old version of BE 8 from our Windows Server 2008 R2, but several services, "Backup Exec 8.x Alert Server", "Backup Exec 8.x Naming Server" and "Backup Exec 8.x Notification Server" remain in its list of services. They cannot be started and appear to be causing trouble with a trial installation of Backup Exec 2010. Does anyone know how to remove these - and any other traces - of BE 8.x products?

Thanks!
Lee

From the article that Amol points you to

NOTE: The procedure in this document is now invalid as Microsoft have withdrawn the MSI Cleanup Utility, any customers that believe they need to manually uninstall any version of Backup Exec should contact Techncial Support for assistence. Any customer that uses the MSI Cleanup utility does so at their own risk.

You need to go Registry Diving yourself, calling Symantec probably won't fly as  v8.6 went End of Assisted Support  2005-01-23 (Last date to contact support)

(and how DID you get v8 on a W2K8R2 server? last OS supported by v8.6 was W2K)

When did you and how did you install BE 8 on Win 2008 R2 server.

Only BE2010 (R1, R2 and R3) as media server can be installed on Win 2008 R2 server.

To completely uninstall BE, refer to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH124227

You will have to clean up registry to get rid of the BE services

Note: Reboot will be required after deleting entries from the registry.

Microsoft has introduced this new cleanup utility. May be this would help in your case:

Not sure that the BE 8.0 installer used MSI as it was designed for NT4, as such any tools from Microsoft to clean up MSI in some way may not be appropriate
