IBM DLT-V4 160/320 GB SATA tape drive support IBM part number 39M5659

First question, is this tape drive supported by Symantec? We have it installed in an IBM server running Windows 2003 Server STD and Backup Exec V10.d. Backup Exec sees the drive and will inventory the tape ( IBM part number 71P9183 - DLT-V4 160/320 GB tape cartridge ). We have made sure it not write protected. If we try to erase ( quick or long ) the tape, label the tape or back up to the tape, the operation fails. Most with an incorrect function message. Has anyone made this combination work? If so, how. We have a second server to stage that will have the same combination of equipment. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using Veritas/Symantec drivers or mfg drivers? have you tried switching?

if you shut down all BackupExec services, does NTBackup see and utilise the drive OK?

The problem was within Windows and the solution was found on the Quantum web site. We had to configure Windows for DMA transfers ( SATA ). The DLT-V4 tape drive is designed to reject write/read commands that are using PIO mode as a method of transfer.

To so according to the site ( and it worked ) you have to enable DMA mode using the Device Manager.
1. Open Device Manager
2. Double click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
3. Right click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected ( in our case Secondary IDE CHannel ), select Properties and then click the Advanced settings tab.
4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select "DMA if available" if the current setting is "PIO Only"
