Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server and WSS 3.0

Hello,

We have the BackupExec 11d (11.0.7170.32) Server running.

We have got a Windows Sharepoint Server 3.0 installed on a Windows 2003R2 Server.

We have the MS SQL Agent for the BackupExec.

My quesitons are:

Will the version of BackupExec 11d, and we were to purchase the "Microsoft SharePoint
Portal Server" Agent would backup the WSS 3.0 server completly.

Would this allow for granular restores to the Database?

If this was backed up direct ot tape would this allow for restores directly to the database, or would this first have to be restored to a temp space before the restore of the granular file?

If we just use the backup using only the SQL and Open File agent, is would only allow for full restore of the Database, and the recover would then have to be done on  second site?  This one I am sure is covered under a doc but I hvae not been able to find it as yet.

Thank you for any help on clearning this up.

Adam

Answers follow:
1. WSS 3.0 is supported with Backup Exec 11d, 7170 build. So using Agent for sharepoint, you would be able to backup sharepoint databases and restore individual documents, by using GRT.
2. Yes, it would allow granular restores of document library.
3. If backing up to tape, granular restore would require staging on a local NTFS volume for extracting the granular information. So, yes you would need enough space on the Backup Exec server to stage the database.
4. SQL Agent would do only database level backup and restore and sharepoint recovery would have to be done outside Backup Exec. So, all the SQL Agent would help is in restoring Sharepoint databases. So, not much would be available from Sharepoint Recovery point of view. You would need to look at sharepoint documentation for this kind of restore. Backup Exec will just backup and restore SQL databases using SQL Agent.
