Hi,

Why do we need an NDMP option in Backup Exec 2010. Can anyone explain a case in which NDMP option may be required.

Regards,

To back up data directly from NAS device. You can backup data from a NAS device to the following locations:

  • A storage device that is directly connected to the NDMP-enabled NAS device (direct-attached)

  • A storage device that is connected to another NDMP-enabled NAS device (filer-to-filer)

  • A backup-to-disk device on a Backup Exec media server (remote)

  • A tape device that is attached to a Backup Exec media server (remote)

  • A shared tape device or backup-to-disk folder that is connected to a SAN with Backup Exec media servers.

Because NAS devices from the likes of EMC, NetApp, BlueArc, etc are closed proprietary systems with their own file systems.

Because backing up over CIFS is painfully slow and inefficient.

Because NDMP is a recognized standard across the industry as a way to backup a network stroage device that all backup software can understand and utilize.

That said, there is a need for NDMP where applicable, and its cost is justifiable if you fit into that camp.
