Netware 6.0 SP5 Bestart wont start

Rafael_Tejada
Level 3
I have a Compaq Proliant CL380 with NetWare 6.0 and SP5 and Backup Exec for NetWare 9.1 Build 1158.4 with the latest drivers and 9.1 patches. When I load Bestart , it wont load. I tried to replicate the startup.ncf from other servers to this server to try to resolve the start up with bestart. I do notice that in the bkupexec.fax file , theres a driver: not specified section. I'm wondering if its not using the correct drivers for this server or is there a missing command line parameter. Here is my complete bkupexec.fax file. Hope someone can find out where my problem relies. Thanks in advance.

Curious to learn whether you found the issue. We are experiencing the same problem. Have been on phone support with Veritas for numerous hours without resolution. Running 9.1, build 1158.4 on a Netware 6 SP6.5 server.

As of today, I still haven't received any help on this matter. Seems like I have three more servers with the same problem. I've uninstalled 9.1 on the servers, removed all Backup objects through the NDS, removed Bkupexec folders, reinstalled also initiated a new SMDR properties with the SMDR NEW commands.......with no luck.

At the servers , I start the Bestart command..........looks likes it going to load.........stop on the NDMPD.NLM area.........then dies and goes back to the server prompt. It's very frustrating because I resolved a similar issue before and I have used the 9.1 on this system and it's worked before til I had to reinstall the latest 9.1 with the latest drivers.
Also modified the startup.ncf file as requested through the knowledge base, still no luck. I must be missing something, I've had this version worked before.

BTW. With the other technical issues I've encountered, seems like no one even cares to respond anymore. I've had posted questions for months with no responses at all. Symantec/Veritas has gone down the tubes

As you can see in the last line, it's trying to load the NDMPD.NLM module in the Bestart screen with green fonts...........then after a min or two.......it just kicks back to the server prompt with this log that i've just posted. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi All,

I had issues very similar to this posting. I had problems with BE ver. 9.1. & 9.2 not loading correctly on startup on all my Novell 6.5 sp 5 servers. I could load it at the command prompt once the server was completely loaded or put a pause before bestart.ncf. It all started when I upgrade the NetWare server to service pack 4a with Netware 6.5

I worked with BE tech support for over 6 weeks and they just had me test this and that. I explained to them that I am not a beta tester and needed to get this resolved. They claimed that no other customers had problems with BE not loading correctly and I ended up closing the case. Bull.... Anyway, we did agree that it is a timing issue with Netware and BE. I am going to post some work arounds that might help someone that is having the same problems. Note: My NetWare servers are less than a year old with high end processors, memory and the newest tape drives available.
********************************************

It is recommended that the above error message be resolved by eliminating the driver load at startup. There are two scenarios relating to how the driver is loaded: Note: This help me slow do the startup of BE, so I could have it auto load in the autoexec.ncfg correctly If I restarted the server.

1. During the custom installation method of NetWare, a storage device .CDM driver must be selected - if any of the above drivers are selected at this time, they will load automatically on startup through the NetWare Peripheral Architecture NLM (NWPA.NLM). In this instance, apply the following:
Add the "UNLOAD " command to the "SYS:SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.NCF" file. If you automatically start Backup Exec from the autoexec.ncf file, ensure that this unload statement is before the "BESTART" line
Add the load line "LOAD NWASPI.CDM" to the "C:\NWSERVER\STARTUP.NCF" file before any .HAM drivers are loaded
Restart server

2. NetWare was installed via a "simple" installation method and the above .CDM driver is loaded via "C:\NWSERVER\STARTUP.NCF". In this instance, apply the following:
Delete the load line for the .CDM driver causing the conflict from "C:\NWSERVER\STARTUP.NCF"
Add the load line "LOAD NWASPI.CDM" to the "C:\NWSERVER\STARTUP.NCF" file before any .HAM drivers are loaded
Restart server
Note - if method 2 still does not resolve the issue, apply method 1.

I ended up using method 1 and it slowdown the starting up BE. It had to unload the NWASPI.CDM and load BECDM.CDM driver. On 2 of my server I also had to put a 60 second pause before loading BE and the end of the auotexec.ncf. Rule of thumb on starting BE is to have it at the end of the autoexec.ncf

Sample:
####################################
# Added by Backup Exec #
####################################
delay 60
BESTART.NCF
####################################

Something else I found that did not help me, but might help you.

If you're using Backup Exec for NetWare, visit support.veritas.com and get the latest Backup Exec build. Find your serial numbers (in the Backup Exec Job Manager screen under Options somewhere), install the new version, then edit sys:system\bestart.ncf to include the additional parameter -b in the LOAD BKUPEXEC line. This loads becdm.cdm instead of nwaspi.cdm.

I am going to post my bestart.ncf configurations. They had me add the ?w9 switch to my. Remember, I am running ver. 9.2 on my server now. I am unable to compare it to ver. 9.1

SEARCH ADD SYS:\BKUPEXEC\NLMS
LOAD SYS:\BKUPEXEC\NLMS\BECDM.CDM
LOAD SYS:\BKUPEXEC\NLMS\BKUPEXEC.NLM -tl -aa -dy -tc -tj -s -w9 %1 %2

As you can see, the line LOAD SYS:\BKUPEXEC\NLMS\BECDM.CDM loads the correct CDM driver and do not need the switch -b

Cheers :)

The biggest problem that I can see with your server 'X4' is that your tape drive and library are connected to a RAID controller. This is not supported or recommended, tape hardware should be connected to a SCSI controller..

Also, remove NWASPI.CDM from startup.ncf - BE does not need this and it can also cause problems.
