Numerous soft read/write tape errors even with new tapes and replaced tape drives (DAT72, Dell)

Hello! I have been fighting a battle with BackupExec v10.0, Rev. 5484 SP5, and a Dell Dat72 tape drive.  Everything is operational, patched, and tests properly, but the statistics for the media display numerous soft read/write errors for the DAT72 tapes.

In troubleshooting this problem, we have replaced tape devices, updated firmware, updated W2003 drivers, installed BackupExec 10.0 sp5, verified the correct drivers from Veritas are running the backup job, and purchased new tapes. The Dell DAT72 tape device passes Dell's xTalk diagnostics software.

The soft read/write errors continue, although the backup jobs complete without errors.

What simple procedure have I missed here?

I have had the exact same problems with the same attempted solutions not working -- was there ever a resolution?
