Problem configuring Tape Drive

I have an "External HP StorageWorks Ultrium 3000 LTO5" drive connected to a "DL180 G6" server through "Smart Array P212" controller. The Server is a Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit and I have installed Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R2. I even installed Hotfix 358289 to have available drivers updated.

I have gone through the "Device Configuration Wizard" to configure the drive, but nothing is showing in the Console. I only have the Media server which is my W2K8 server. The drive was detected during the first 3 tries and drivers successfully installed but nothing showing, however any subsequent try is now indicating that there is no device supported. The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 3000 LTO5  is among the supported device on the HLC.

How should I proceed to resolve the problem. I do not mind reinstalling Backup Exec since no job or policy has been defined so far.

Thanks

OK...this could be the problem...

That tape drive you have doesn't appear on the list of supported tape drives according to the QuickSpecs.

HOWEVER...if you check the matrix on the link below, as well as the QuickSpecs for Ultrium drives below, the connection between the drive and the card are both supported AND recommended!

So I'd recommend updating your drivers for the SAS card, as well as updating the drivers (HP) and firmware for the tape drive.

Once done, restart the server. After the restart, go into Windows Device Manager and make sure the drive is shown. Then go into BE and see if you can see it there, before updating the drivers through the Device Configuration Wizard.

Last step here would be to either run LiveUpdate or install the latest BE patches/SP manually and try again.

Do you see the device in the Windows device manager ?

Hi there,

OK...so according to the HP StorageWorks EBS Compatibility Matrix, that SAS card is also supported by BE.

Next thing to check is that you can see that tape drive in Windows. If you can't, BE won't see it either...

I have been able to resolved the problme by updating the controller Firmware and driver, and as well as pluging the controller-cable into the second slot. I can see the Drive both on DeviceManager and BackupExec.
