Recovering Windows 2000 SBS from Backup (using Backup Exec 9.1)

Hello,

We are using BackupExec 9.1 (BE91) with Exchange server agent to backup Windows 2000 SBS domain controller and Exchange 2000 (running on the same server). We do daily full system backups and that of Exchange.

Recently, we need to recover the Active Directory and Exchange to a different machine (which is not 100% identical to the original server in hardware components, but similar in aspects like disk space, RAM, etc.). The procedure we followed is described in Veritas support document at http://support.veritas.com/docs/243037. We installed all service packs and hotfixes as they were on the original server. The restore job gave no error and executed the restore of system state and logical drives. This is uptil point 24 in the above mentioned document. After a system reboot, the server did not boot correctly and hang at very start (when displaying start bar). In debug mode the last file that system loads is mup.sys, and then system hangs.

The original system hardware is Compaq Proliant ML 370
The system on which restore is being done is Compaq Proliant 1600.

- What could be possible causes for the above mentioned problem and how these could be identified/solved?
- Is restoring a complete system to a different machine (which may have different hardware components) is supported by BE91? If yes, then are there any additional steps to be considered while restoring the system?
- If directly restoring to different hardware is not supported, then what backup and restore strategy should be adopted to be able to do so? (As being able to restore system to only a 100% similar machine will be very restrictive and impractical due to hardware changes/upgrades).

Thanks for any response.

Kind regards,

Hello,

Please see the technote below regarding recovery using different hardware.

It is possible to do a disaster recovery to different hardware but there are certain limitations which are outlined in the following technote:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/191461.htm

Also please see the technote below as additional information:

Thanks,
