Release an In Use Device

Storer
Not applicable
A backup job failed and after cancelling the job the Quatum tape drive is still showing that it is in use. Because the drive is reserved, we cannot start the next backup. How can I release this device? We are using version 11d and a Windows 2003 server. The tape drive is a Quantum DLT-V4.

Hello

Restart the Backup Exec services, if it still does not fix the issue then reboot the device.

Powercycle of server and the device will definately fix the issue.

Powercyle procedure:  Shutdown the server and the device, 1st switch on the device let it get initialized, once the device is initialized switch

 on the server.

If the sollution mentioned by AmolZeroCool does not work then you might need to remove the tape from the drive to a specific slot manually using the Web console of the library or speak with the Hardware vendor to get it out of the tape drive.

Also keep in mind that after removing the tape, you will need to restart Backup Exec servicesin order for Backup Exec to realize that the tape is no longer present in the tape drive.
