Remote Agent stopped working again

Hello,
I previously posted this issue in another thread:

http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?threadID=64850&tstart=0

but the problem spontaneously resolved itself so I closed the inquiry.

However, sometime this past Monday (7/17) it stopped working again. The remote backup worked Monday 7/17 at 6am but it failed with the same error as before on Tuesday 7/18 at 6am (0xa00084f9 - A communications failure has occurred between the Backup Exec job engine and the remote agent.).

We cannot find anything that changed on the server during that time period that could have caused it to stop working. I rechecked all of the suggestions from the previous thread, but the remote backup still does not work. The local backup works fine.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello Dawn,

- Do you get this Problem only on one of the remote Servers or on all the Remote Servers in the Environment?
- Any Databases running on this Server?
- Could you put the Job Engine and the Remote Agent in Debug mode and paste the Debug log here.....

Hello,

1. This is the only server we back up remotely.

2. SQL 2000 is running on the remote server. No DB on the main server. The backup job fails with the same error whether or not the SQL DB is included.

Hi,

ERROR: ndmpdDataConnect: connect error: 10060

This shows that the Port 10000 is being used by some other application.

Download this utility to check if the Port 10000 is listening to beremote.exe:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/TcpView.html

If is being used by some other application then change the port on the Backup server as well as on all remote servers.

I ran the backup and watched tcpview the whole time, and nothing else is listening to or using port 10000 on either machine.

I followed the instructions to change the port in that document - I set ndmp to 12000 on both servers, and the backup job failed with the same error. I changed it to 20000, same error.

This is ridiculous. Why is it so difficult? I'm seriously considering getting rid of Veritas on all of my servers.

--Is the Remote Agent Service running under Local System Account ?
--You could also upgrade to BEWS9.1 on the server and pushinstall remote agents once agian ,then check the performance .

Yes, the remote agent is running under the local system account on both servers.

Both servers are running 9.1 rev. 4691 already.
