Replacement procedure for new Tape Drive

Hi I am replacing an old DLT drive with a new Dell PowerVault 110T LTO-2-L. I want to make sure I have the procedure for doing this correct. Please read below and let me know if I got it right.


1.Make sure new drive is on backup exec HCL.
2.Download and install latest backup exec drivers.
3.Shut down server, remove old drive,install new SCSI Card and tape
drive and boot server.
4.Modify BIOS to diable onborad SCSI channel that old drive
was attached to.
5. Start Backup Exec Program
6.On the tools menu, point to Wizards, and then select �Device
Configuration Wizard�
7.Go through the Wizard to get the drive setup and ready to go.
8.Delete old drive and old media set (Media Set 1)
8.Create new media set using �Media Set� wizard.
9.Edit backup jobs to point to the new drive and media set.
10.I�m done.

I have a few questions about this procedure if it is correct, but will wait for an intial response on this before I ask those. Thanks.

Hi Charlie,

Your procedure is probably fine, but here's ours:

After step four:

Stop BE services.
Run tapeinst.exe to install the Veritas driver for the tape drive.
Start BE services.
Continue with your process.

Hi Charlie ,

Make sure from Hardware Vendor whether both the drives support the Media type you are using for backups !

Disable and delete the old drive before performing powercycle steps to connect the new drive !!

As per the step 6,Device Configuration Wizard install the latest drivers if the drive is supported on HCL !!

Thanks much for your input. I will give it a shot. A few other questions if I may. When I boot the server for the first time after installing the new drive it will likely detect the drive and either automatically install and/or prompt me to install the Windows OEM drivers. Is that OK?

Will the Veritas driver allow the new drive to work with the built in Windows Backup program?

Will by backup jobs be lost or will I just need to edit them to point to the new drive and media set? Thanks much.

So do I allow the Server to install the OEM Windows Driver or should try to cancel that?

Hi,

Try cancelling that and use tapeinst to install veritas drivers:

Later check in device manager, which drivers are installed for the tape device.
