Server 2003 System State Backup Failure

J_M_3

We experienced a server failure (RAID 5 controller card failure), we recovered our server using NT Backup on our 2003 DC. After this recovery we have found that we could no longer make a full backup using NT Backup (backup simply hanging and crashing server) therefore we purchased Symantec Backup Exec (Ver 10d).
Unfortunately we are still experiencing the same issues – we cannot create a full
backup.

When we attempt a full backup the server will hang and become unresponsive, and will eventually crash. We have followed Microsoft’s advice to simply leave the server to see if it will eventually complete the backup, we have left the server backing up for 20 hours but when we returned we still found the server unresponsive.

We have confirmed with our hardware vendor that it is not a hardware issue. We have also narrowed the problem down to when we backup the system state. When we exclude the system state from backups it will successfully complete, we have also carried out test recoveries to confirm data integrity.

We would appreciate any suggestions or help anyone can provide.

Hello,

- Is it a local backup or a remote backup?
- Are you backing up on tape or on a Backup to disk folder?
- Do you receive any errors?
- do you receive any events in the event logs?

Hello,

What is the error message that you receive when you backup the system state?

Also please check in the event viewer in the system and application logs if there are any Backup Exec entries in there.

We do not get an error message when we do a system state backup, the server will just hang.

I have checked the Event Viewer as requested. We have no errors regarding Backup Exec.

Hi there

Problem solved by Technet, it was a corrupt db that had to be rebuilt from the cmd prompt.

Thanks for the help.
