Server freezes during backup

Our server (W2K with Veritas 9.1 rev.4691) freezes during backup. At start it did the full backup but the next day the backup freezes the server and forces it to reboot. Seems similar to the problem reported in http://support.veritas.com/docs/274851 (same errors) but the suggested solution did not do the trick.

Does anyone have another solution?

Helllo,

Does the server freezes during each and every backup job or a particular backup job ?

Since when you having this problem ?

Is it a local backup or remote server backup ?

Are you backing up any database application ?

Is there any event error reported in the Event viewer when the server freezes ?

Kindly update.

Regards

> answer: The server freezes during every backup.

Since when you having this problem ?

> answer: The problem occured when the tape device was replaced by IBM. Because of the backup freeze the tape unit was again replaced by IBM but still no solution. The only bottleneck now is the Veritas software.

Is it a local backup or remote server backup ?

> answer: It is a local backup.

Are you backing up any database application ?

> answer: No. we only backup local user data stored on the local server.

Is there any event error reported in the Event viewer when the server freezes ?

> answer: Yes, I will report that later (tomorrow). Maybe the above answers wil help for now?

Hello,

Thank you for the update.

What is the tape drive that you are using ?

Have you installed Veritas drivers ?

You can upgrade Backup Exec v9.1 to Service Pack 4a. Please refer to the link :

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers revision 4691 - Service Pack 4a - Includes Critical Security Update
http://support.veritas.com/docs/280008

Run a test backup job and check the results.

Sorry for the late response. Here are my answers to your questions:

What is the tape drive that you are using ?
> answer: It is a Seagate 4mm DAT tape drive

Have you installed Veritas drivers ?
> answer: Yes, genuine drivers are installed for this drive

Update is already performed but had no effect.

The strange thing is that I can perform a test run OK but the actual (real) backup that runs at nighttime still will freeze the server.

Thnx,
Teun Meijer

Hello Teun,
Please uninstall veritas tape drivers, install the OEM drivers and check the results, this could be due to incompatible filter drivers.

I am sorry but the proposed solution did not work. I installed the OEM drivers from the manufacturer, made a test run and everything seemed ok. But the actual (nightly) backup still freezed the server.

There are no messages in the Event Log that indicate errors wit the device.

Hello,

- After disabling the RSM service did you reboot the machine?

- Do you receive any events in the system logs?

All the proposed solutions did not work for us. But after re-installing the Veritas software the problem was finally solved.

N.B.
We used the OEM drivers instead of the Veritas drivers.

Case closed.
