Small gripe about live updates

robnicholson

Backup Exec 2010 popped up a live update message saying three new hotfixes were available:

Hotfix 358410 - http://entsupport.symantec.com/umi/V-373-01005
Hotfix 358288 - http://entsupport.symantec.com/umi/V-373-01003
Hotfix 358289 - http://entsupport.symantec.com/umi/V-373-01004

All very good but the first two links don't work and neither does searching the KB for them.

Cheers, Rob.

Hello

Link for Hotfix 358410  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH138749

Link for Hotfix 358288  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH138224

BTW Live update should download and install the above updates.

No disrespect intended but the fact that Live Update could install it automatically is really moot.  For one of these latest fixes it has only to do with Linux and Oracle - neither of which we have in our environment so why risk the fix-this-break-this scenario that is possible with what amounts to hotfixes?  I want to read about the patch first and then decide myself whether it should be applied or not.  The fact that the links do not work is a real pain when you are already overworked and underpaid, and trying to get a quick look at what the problem is.  Maybe better to explain how you can find the links rather than just posting them up because its likely to happen again.

However, if the OP is just going to gripe and not open a support ticket, then how is the product supposed to be improved?

One would think though that at least someone would have studied the hyperlinks to make sure they worked before implementing them this way.  BE and LU has been around for ages and should not have these random mis-steps like links broken, truncated SMS, and manual installs.  Just my gripe too I guess.

Now go let support know about it!

Why do these problems still happen; isn't there someone monitoring this forum?

The error shown to me is:

"Internal Server Error - Read

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Reference #3.e7f434d.1289919554.4b37f23"

Will have to check we have a support contract. We don't tend to sign up to them as I often find peer support works better... that says a lot doesn't it!

That said, I think because of the issues we've had with our Quantum SuperLoader and Backup Exec, we are on some form of software maintenance. We're certainly on hardware maintenance for the tape drive as it keeps failing :)

I posted it here because I really didn't think it was worthy of submitting a support call. But then again, considering it's just fixing up a hyperlink (or rather making the link point to a valid page), then they should know about it.

I agree with your general sentiment that something like this happening is rather sloppy process & procedures from what is a main supplier of software.

sigh - two more updates popped up this morning and once again the links don't work:

again...

http://entsupport.symantec.com/umi/V-373-01013 needs to go here

Worked after multiple retries - what's up with that?  First to the general search page, then to the correct link?
http://entsupport.symantec.com/umi/V-373-01014

Wow - this one worked

Yeah, I noticed that as well but didn't have the will power to follow-up/report the error.

Cheers, Rob.

...those are pretty much generic links for whatever reason. You'll see them with a lot of the errors too. I prefer to let LiveUpdate do its trick (because Symantec are GOING to tell you to update with those patches you've left off anyway as we all know :) ), but I also simply copy/paste the HF # into the search function of the Symantec homepage and read up on the patch information there.

That said, LiveUpdate simply notifies you of what is there and available. If you select to apply them automatically, it does. Otherwise it is just a notification. My major issue with LiveUpdate is the fact that there is no resume function...THAT irritates me to no end!

Can I lastly suggest that you post the gripe you have as an Idea in that section about having proper links to the patches available? With enough "thumbs-up", it has to be given due consideration.

Laters!
