Sony LIB-81 Shutter locked by scsi

Kelly_Smothers

Environment: Windows Server 2003, Veritas 9.1 Rev 4691.

Everyone Monday morning when I change tapes the LIB-81 gives a message that says, "Shutter locked by scsi".
The only way I've been able to get it unlocked is to unlock it within Veritas (\devices\server\robotic libraries\device\unlock.

After I do that, Veritas then thinks that the LIB-81 is offline and will not reestablish connection unless I reboot the server.

I have updated to the latest Veritas drivers (BackupExecTapeDeviceDriverInstall_273853.exe) and insured my Adaptec drivers are current (Adaptec Family Manager Set v4.0 Service Pack 5). I have not updated the bios on the 29160 card yet however.

Sony tells me (That is an issue with the Veritas software and you will have to contact Veritas for support on that issue.)

Can you point me to a FAQ for help?

Hello,

You may try to reconfigure the device:

Title : How to recreate tape drives and autoloaders in Backup Exec for Windows Servers

I have the same problem. I also have a Sony LIB-81

It began with BE 9.1 SP2 - before SP2, the shutter was locked by scsi only very occasionally, maybe 2 times in a year, and unlocking it did not cause the device to go offline. After SP2, the shutter is locked by scsi every time I try to replace tapes, and when I unlock it in Backup Exec, the device goes offline. Only a reboot restores the connection. Later I installed SP3 hoping that would fix this bug, but it did not.

I tried your suggestion to recreate the tape drives, no luck.

I do not want this functionality - can we turn off the locking of the shutter? I understand it is meant for my protection, but it is making my backups extremely unreliable and requiring a manual reboot every day.

This is pretty much the same issue that I have in another posting. The way that I can get it back on is by restarting the backup exec services.

Yes, I even went so far as to schedule a batch script to stop and restart the BE services, but too often (most of the time I think) one of the services would not stop cleanly - usually the device and media service - and so the backup would fail. Only rebooting has been completely reliable.

The goal is for a non-administrative staffer to change the tapes - someone who cannot log on to the media server - as we have done for years. Requiring a sysadmin to be there to change the tapes is a huge step backwards for us.

Can you post a link to the other thread you speak of?

You are right about the restart of the computer.

Hi,

I have having the same issue. But I did not see a solution anywhere. Can someone let me know how they corrected this.

I am sure this is a Verities issue since I was able to get Sony to send me another LIB-81 drive

my situation is worse. I could open the door after rebooting the Backup Exec Server last year but this morning it's no luck.

Can any one tell how to keep Backup Exec set to unlock?
It makes too much trouble rather than security. My users may not believe it takes me so long to change the tape to backup/restore a single file.
