Speed up backups on NT 4 servers.

Hello, I have been trying to backup my NT 4 systems using Backup Exec 10 whihc is installed on a Server 2003 machine but it takes over 40 hours to complete. I had Seagate Backup Exec installed prior to this and it was physically attached to my PDC and the complete backup would only take about hours of all servers. Now I have ver 10.0 installed on a new server which means im backing up during off hours using the network to a LTO device. I need this to perform the way it used too, is it possible to speed up the process over the network?

Check to make sure that "AutoNegotiate" is NOT selected for the Server NICs and Switch ports. hard set each end of each pipe to 100/Full or whatever is appropriate for your network.

Hello,

Please note that this configuration is not supported. You cannot backup NT4 using 10.0. Please refer the software compatibility list.

Thank you Veritas employee for the tip, however I was already aware that you would not help me nor is the configuration supported by you when I have NT 4 in the mix. I have had a couple of successful backups using Backup Exec 10 on NT 4 servers, my only question was how to increase the speed. So I will rephrase my question, how can I speed up the process of backing up to a LTO tape drive. My nics are at full duplex, however they are only 100mbps cards, looking into upgrading to 1gb cards, but for now I have to utilize whatever I have. It has worked in the past and there should be no reason why it wouldnt work now. So if you have any tips as to how within the software I can make changes to speed up the process.

Hi,

As far as improving the thruput is concerned, some settings can be modified to improve the performance
e.g. disabling "Display progress indicators for backup" option or enabling compresson.

Please refer to the documents below for more information

Hi,

I am having the same issues with BackupExec 10.0 on WIN2K server with Sony LIB-D81AIT autoloader (8 slots) - The backup runs for 12 hrs, earlier I was using BE v8.6 on the same WIN2K server with a Sony single slot drive - this was backing up the same data in 5.30hrs.
I tried all the solutions on this Discussion forums - Any other clues.

Cheers,

Hello,

What is the data that you are backing up and have you followed the technotes sent earlier?
