Stop Error about 5 min into scheduled backup

I am running v 10.0 Rev 5484

I upgraded to v 10 several weeks ago. No problems several weeks. Then I had a couple of times where Windows 2003 server rebooted and came back up with message telling there had been a "SYSTEM FAILURE: STOP ERROR" 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x8059dcac, 0xae78b5b0, 0x00000000).

If I start the job again, it may or may not do it it again.

I also upgraded to Symantec Antivirus Corp Ed 10 several weeks ago. I saw someone mention this might be related, but this problem didn't show up until about a month after antivirus was updated and the same backup jobs ran every day.

I have an event ID 6008 (telling me last restart was unexpected) and an Event ID 1003 (same info as above on stop error)

I just can't find much when I search for this issue. It went away for a couple of weeks and I had hoped to forget about it. It has been back Thur and Fri. Last night, I erased tape and started job again. It completed fine. Going to give that a whirl tonight as well and see what happens.

Any and all help is much appreciated.

Brad,

A dump or Drwtsn log would help you confirm if it's really a Backup Exec issue, make sure you find it and analyse it so we can fix the problem.

There was no Dr. Watson log. I don't know that I had it turned on, but do now.

This has happened about 7 times and all 7 times were approx 5 minutes into the same scheduled backup.

About half the time it happens again if I restart the backup, the other half, the backup completes and all is well.

I switched to the Quantum device driver, but no luck. It happened again last night. It is EXACTLY 5 minutes into the scheduled backup job. I turned on Dr. Watson, but it never generates a log file from what I can tell.

PLEASE SOMEONE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do I need the MS SOftware Shadow Copy Provider? I don't have any drives setup to use this service and it is set MANUAL. Can I disable this service without any issues?

However, exact as described here http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs/browse_thread/thread/8477047fec7112fb/2fe735e14e4c89c7?lnk=st&q=%22SYSTEM+FAILURE:+STOP+ERROR%22+0x0000008e+symantec&rnum=1&hl=en#2fe735e14e4c89c7

THIS IS EXACT SAME FOR ME ...

"The last event in the System Event log before reboot is
"The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the
running state.
Source: Service control Manager, ID 7036

This has been happening since upgrading to SAV 10 Corporate.
Shadowed copies on the hard drive have been disabled the whole time. "

Brad,

- If the error you're getting is this one:

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED 0x0000008e {c0000005, xxxxxxxx, xxxxxxxx, 0}

Then it's a NAV 10 issue, not a BE:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/pfdocs/2005081909325748?Open&dtype=corp

- Do you have this in Event logs?

Event ID: 1003
Stop Error: 1000008e, Parameter1 c0000005, Parameter2 8059d4fc, Parameter3 f5ebd5b0, Parameter4 00000000

If so, make sure you:

- Download Sevinst.exe from the Symantec FTP site

- Save the file to a folder on the hard drive (for example, C:\Windows\Temp)

- Open a command prompt, and change to the folder where you downloaded the Sevinst.exe file

- Type the following: sevinst.exe SAVCE

- Restart the computer

Hope this helps.

Hi, Sam. The parameters don't match the ones you quoted "Stop Error: 1000008e, Parameter1 c0000005, Parameter2 8059d4fc, Parameter3 f5ebd5b0, Parameter4 00000000"

Mine that differ are ... parameter2 8059dcac, parameter3 ab9035b0.

I tried this Sat ... http://support.microsoft.com/?id=830575

Article ID:830575

Re-registered Sqlvdi.dll

On mine the Shadow Copy service is set to manual and not started until Backup Exec appears to do so. It also starts it during backup to disk jobs, but I have never had the problem with that type of backup. After the backup is complete or sometime during it, it stops the shadow copy service again.

Sqlvdi.dll was NOT the issue. It happened again last night and this was the first time that it happened 5 minutes into a backup to disk job. All others involved tape.

So, I updated Sevinst from Symantec and have fingers crossed.

Is Service Pack 1 for 2003 installed? As VSS components are involved, I would definitely apply these fixes too:

Hope this helps.
