Symantec Differential/mod time backs up full data every time

Hey,

We are currently using Netgear ReadyNas 2100 are facing problems with the backup.

The differential backsup full data every time it runs.We generally have full backups(using mod time for linux system)during the weekends and differential backup in the weekdays. We aslo use monthly backups at the end of the month.

The full backups are completed succesfully without any issue.

Is the issue related to netgear?

Would it good option to try incremental backup?

Can we make a differential backup link to a particular full backup,

it  compares the files with the full backup date specified by me?

No.  The easiest way to ensure that your full backup and your differential backups are linked is to

1) create a policy

2) add a template for the full backup

3) add a template for the differential backup

4) apply the selection list to generated the full and differential jobs.

Do you have AV scans on your NAS?  Some AV scan will cause the incremental/differential jobs to become full backups.

What version of Backup Exec you are using?

Is your Full and Differential backups using same selection list?

Are you backing up data from NAS or targeting backup sets to a NAS device?

Its Backup 2010 R3,

Yes the selection list is same.

We have installed backup on windows server 2008 and it remotely takes backup from the Nas server into The tapes.

Remote Agent for linux is already installed.

Can we manually link a differential job to a particular full backup and compare files which have changed from that full backup?

We have AV scans but it does not modify the time of the files.

But we have two different jobs named as daily and weekly.Selection list of both can be changed.

Do we need to create one job and add template of daily and full backup in it?

See my blog below

List down all your jobs, their schedule, full or differential, and which selection list is used.

4 Daily jobs-Sunday,Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday

Weekly on every Thursday.

On the last thursday of the month we do full monthly backup.

There is one job for every backup(Daliy, weekly and monthly)

Selection List of all can be changed but i have same for every one of them.

Should i just create one policy and add templates for Weekly,Daily and Monthly ?

Presumably, your weekly backup is a full backup and your daily jobs are your differential backups.  If so, then you can have one policy with a monthly, weekly and daily templates.

If you do modify your selection list, you got to do a full backup before you continue with your differential backups.

Weekly is Full/Mod time and Daily is Differential/Mod time.

I will try to create one policy and include all the jobs daily, weekly and monthly in it.

I will let you know the results.

On creating only a single policy with all the templates of Weekly, monthly daily did the trick for me.

It backed only modified data which was around 2 GB rather than backing up the whole data.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!
