Tape Recognition Issues-LTO2 tapes, Ultrium 2

Currently running a Windows 2003 Server on an HP DL380,
Adaptec 39160 SCSI cards attached to two IBM 3582-L23 Ultrium 2 LTO changers each with 2 tape units. Bachup Exec 10 (latest build) is installed. Each changer has a bar code reader and all tapes are labeled with bar codes. Using only Veritas drivers for all at the moment. The issue is that Backup Exec will not EVER recognize LTO2 tapes. When an inventory is run after a new tape is introduced into the library it reports it and all subsequent others as cleaning media. I have verified these are all blank media. How do I get Backup Exec to see them for what they are?

Stop & Restart Backup Exec Services and check for SCSI & device configuration errors. in System & Application logs.

Verify Removable Storage Service is Disabled.

Under device Manager, verify Medium changer is "Unknown Medium Changer"

What is the tape drive driver version?

In Addition to what Ray said:
1) Please check if your device configuration is compatible with Veritas BEWS. Our Hardware Compatibility List:
http://support.veritas.com/menu_ddProduct_BEWNT_view_CL.htm

If your configuration doesn't match with our HCL then install the device drivers of the H/w provider otherwise install the latest Veritas drivers.support.veritas.com/menu_ddProduct_BEWNT_view_DOWNLOAD.htm

2) Please make sure that the firmware of the tape drive and changer and the drivers of the scsi controller are updated!

i had that same problem but not with LTO tapes. it ended up being a drive issue. no matter what tapes (new or old) they would come up as cleaning media. tried troubleshooting with veritas for days and found out the problem was the drive itself. we are now running lto2 and lto3 tapes with veritas and don't have any problems with cleaning media. hope that helps.
