Tape drive appears offline

Hello all,

I have Veritas BackupExec 9.1 w SP4 running on a Windows 2003 Server. The tape drive is an IBM 4560SLX. My problem is that on a couple of occasions when the backups are going to start running, I get an email telling me that there seems to have been a hardware error on the drive and in BackupExec it becomes offline. However, I restart the server and the jobs will start running, without touching the tape unit.

This does not happen every day, but it has now happened 2 days this week. I had not experienced this problem before installing SP4.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

What is the exact error in job log?

Verify if the device you are using is listed in HCL as tested:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/271383
http://support.veritas.com/docs/271382

Install latest drivers: http://support.veritas.com/docs/273853

Update the firmware.

Check system event log for event ids 7, 9, 11 or 15.

Can I do the Driver Update (link you provided) in an existing Veritas installation?

The firmware update is of the tape drive correct?

Now I am also having trouble with my exchange backups. The exchange server reboots itsalf (Stop error) when Veritas starts backing it up. I get the error that Veritas lost communication with the remote agent in the server. When I submit the error report to Microsoft, the report they show me is that some unknown driver caused the crash. It has only hapenned when Veritas is running, althoough it doesnt happen everyday.

If I need to poen a new thread with this new problem please tell me so.

Hi Juan,

Yes, update the driver on an existing Veritas installaion.

And update Firmware of SCSI and as well as the SCSI driver and also stop the Removable Storage Manager Service.

For that other issue we request you to create a new post.

Thanks

I too am having the same problem with the tape drive showing as offline. This happened after the power went out to the server and tape drive. I also have events 9, 11, and 15 in the event viewer. Should I also update the device drivers and the SCSI firmware? Or should I reboot the server first to see if the drive will come back online? Thanks!

Hello Kareem,

You could install the drivers. That should not harm the system.
- Rebooting might also help.
You can also follow the following Article:
