Tape drive offline after every job

Hello

Apologies if this has been covered before (I've had a look but unable to find any up-to-date information on this issue).

We have recently upgraded one of our client's systems and are havign a perculiar issue with Backup Exec.

Basically after every job that uses the Tape Drive the drive appears to go offline in Backup Exec and will not come back until we restart the services.

The drive is still accessible in Windows Device Manager and appears to be working fine.

This happens after any event that accesses the drive - eject tape, inventory, backup, restore.

The specs are as follows:

Windows SBS 2011

Backup Exec 2010 r3 (fully updated)

HP LTO Ultrium-4 Tape Drive

DELL PERC 5/i Adapter RAID Controller (no other drive is on here - it's dedicated to the tape drive).

The backups are done in 3 parts starting with an inventory to remind the designated staff member he has to put the tape in but without any intervention the drive goes offline after this and the backup fails.

I've managed to get around it by running a script in windows that restarts the backup exec services 15 minutes before the due job time. (We tried this in Backup exec itself but when the script restarted the services backup exec seemed to forget what it was doing afterwards).

The drive worked perfectly with Backup Exec 12.5 in the old SBS 2008 server and has done for a number of years.

I've fully updated the drivers - used both the Symantec and Manufacturer's drivers.

We've reset the raid card config, tried every setting on there, but it still keeps happening.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Backup Exec as well.

I did notice a similar issue with Backup Exec 12.0 in another forum but the only response was to buy another controller card which my client is reluctant to do if there's no guarantee of fixing it.

I was wondering if anyone else has come across this or anyone knows how to fix it without spending money on replacing parts without knowing for sure that's the problem.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Andy

Is the Tape drive connected to SCSI configured channel on this controller.

As per HCL for BE 2010 tape drives attached to RAID controller are not supported (Unless specifically stated in technote http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH70907).

You can find the details on http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=answerlink&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.symantec.com%2Fb...

Also, Dell PERC 5/i array controller can be run in SCSI mode (non-RAID) and only stand-alone tape drives are supported on this controller. Find more details in the following article.
