Transport and storage encryption?

Hi,

We are currently running Backup Exec 9.0 in one of our customer's environments. Due to new regulations they have to start following, we need to ensure that both the data transfered from the clients to the backup server, and also the data stored on tape, is encrypted.

So far all I can find is an option to password protect media in BackupExec 9.0. Does this really encrypt all the data on the tape, or is the data still stored unencrypted yet password protected somehow?

Also there don't seem to be any options to specify encrypting the transfer of the data between the clients and the server. Is the transfer automatically encrypted or is it not encrypted? Or maybe there are some new encryption options in 9.1?

Thanks!
Jeremy

BackupExec does not offer DataEncryption.

You would need to get some third party software (or possible another backup solution) to comply with this regulation

Hello,

Backup Exec can only password protect media.Backup Exec does not encrypt the data on the tape. If you set a password then it is required when you perform a catalog on the tape. Hence the information contained in the tape cannot be read without the correct password. The password cannot be recovered if you forget it. You will then need to erase the media in order to reuse it. Password protected media can be erased without requiring the password.
There is no functionality to backup data with encryption on to the tape. However, you may launch a product enhancement request using the following link:

In order to password - protect media ,this option can be selected from the Device and Media tab on the Backup Job Properties dialog box. Check the option "Password protect media" and enter the appropriate media password.
When a password-protected media is taken to another site, such as another media server, this password will be required to catalog the tape.

Encryption of backed up data on the tapes is, however, not currently a feature of Backup Exec. Data on the tapes is stored in MTF format.
