Trying to restore a deleted User and their Exchange Mailbox

Hi all. Hoping someone can help me.

I deleted a User today in SBS 2003 that had left the company. The company then decided they needed the deleted User afterall. I've never actually had to restore a deleted User before so I'm not at all clear on the correct procedure. I have no idea where I've gone wrong.

The first thing I tried was to recreate the User under Users in Server Management, using the original login and password, and then tried to restore their User Folder and Mailbox off the latest tape created by Backup Exec v9.1.

The restore failed with an error "Final error: 0xa0008488 - Access is denied."

Looking at the log I see:

Restore - \\SERVER\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes Access denied - unable to restore directory Top of Information StoreInboxMBAVNewsbriefs.
Access denied - unable to restore file .
Access denied - unable to restore file 14 - Newsbrief.

After this failed restore, when I login as this user I can see their My Doc's but when I open Outlook none of their mailbox folders are there and the Outlook status bar says something like Folders not updated. When I go to send a new email it errors (can't remember the error exactly).

Does my problem make any sense to anyone? Should I delete the User again and start from scratch using a different procedure, or is there a way I can properly restore their mailbox so that it will work correctly?

First thing to try before you do anything else is check in the Exchange System Manager and see if the users mailbox is still listed within Servers, , First Storage Group, Mailbox Store, Mailboxes.

By default Exchange will keep hold of deleted mailboxes for a period of time (30 days I think) before actually purging them, so unless that has been turned off by someone the mail account should still be accessible through there.

It's been a while since I last did it, but I think if you re-create the users account first, then go into Exchange System Manager, right click the relevant mailbox and select Reconnect, you will be asked which account to associate the mailbox to, at which point you can choose your newly created account and finger crossed it'll work.

Hello,

Durning the restore did you select the option "Automatically recreate the user accounts and the mailbox" in the restore selections under Settings> Microsoft Exchange.

Thank You,

Shweta

Thank you for your reply.

I did actually try this first. The old mailbox is still listed with a red cross in the icon, but it's in the list. I did exactly as you suggested, but in the "select a new user for this mailbox" window I cannot get it to find this user, or any other user for that matter. I typed in the user name and clicked "Check names", and I get this error:

"An Object (User or other object) with the following name cannot be found:"
...and the error message goes on but you get the idea.

I tried entering various other current user names, full names, etc, but all attempts result in the above error message.

When I type in Administrator and click check names, it finds "Administrator Templates" which I assume is not the actual Administrator user.

I have "User or other objects" selected as the type, and "Entire Directory" selected as the location.

I'm quite puzzled why this doesn't work. Any ideas?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, after my initial failure with trying to reconnect the mailbox to the recreated user, I deleted the User again and tried what you suggested.

This time it seemed to fail completely - not restoring any of the mailbox folders or messages, and it did not recreated the User either.

The main error was:

Final error: 0xa0008488 - Access is denied.

Final error category: Security Errors

Followed by a list of every folder and message for this user. The list being so long that I won't post it here.

Any ideas why this didn't work?

Would rebooting the server after creating or deleting a User help clear these Access Denied errors? Or is there something more to what I'm doing wrong?

A few days ago I figured out what I was doing wrong, but had I not this article would have been very useful.

My mistake was that when I recreated the user I did not untick the option to create an exchange mailbox. So, I could not reconnect the old mailbox with the new user because it already had a mailbox associated with it.

Thanks everyone for your help.
