Unrecoverable error writing to a dynamic journal file Redux

Christian_Antko

Brand new installation of CPS 10.1d with all the patches on the server.

Pushed client agent to file server I wish to back up. Patched and rebooted both servers.

Started a backup job.

Randomly gives the above error and is unable to complete a job.

Is there any way to debug this ?

More info: Both servers are HP DL380 G4's connected to an HP MSA30 external RAID chassis.

I have the HP management agents installed on both systems.

Hi Christian,

This situation may occur if the dynamic journal writer has become "overwhelmed"

by the number and volume of i/o requests occurring on the system being backed up.

But If the i/o activity level on the server drops somewhat, the CPS "continuous

backup" job may restart and run successfully.

Please do revert back if the problem persists.

Thanks and regards,

I understand that the journal writer can become "overwhelmed"

I have not yet been able to successfully syncronize a 2TB volume to our backup server because I keep running into these journal errors.

What can we do to mitigate the server from becoming overwhelmed.

I've already adjusted performance settings for "Programs" under Processor Scheduling and Memory Usage, and it's made a bit of a difference in stability, but still keep running into these errors.

Hi,

When have you rebooted the servers last time ?

Are you also getting any relate Event ids ?
e,g Event ID ( 1108 ) in Source ( CPS Agent ) cannot be found
Event ID ( 1027 ) in Source ( CPS Agent ) cannot be found.

Have you also installed any HF or SP of CPS ?

Update us on the same and revert for any further Query
Hope this will help you

Thank you
Gauri

1) The main server I am trying to back up has not been rebooted in a week. It's a production file server, and am reluctant to reboot it during the day.

2) No related Event ID's. Just "Error writing to a dynamic journal file"

3) The CPS server and clients are all up-to-date with the latest patches and hotfixes.

Ok. I've found a "workaround" to the problem.

Rather than trying to create a job to syncronize the entire 2TB volume, I broke the backup job into several jobs, that each back up a certain directory, or groups of directories.

While I don't have any solid "proof", it seemed like CPS would start running into problems around 800GB-1TB into a job.
