A reboot may be required since this is a major version upgrade (not a service pack or hotfix install).
But you can always choose to reboot later (you'l get a prompt asking reboot now or later).
Note: Make sure you reboot the media server as soon as possible after the upgrade is complete and if it requires a reboot.

You can directly upgrade from 11d to Be2010R2. Make sure you have all your licenses in place.
Do take backup of DATA & CATALOGS folder before starting the upgrade process.
After upgrading the media server you will have to upgrade the remote agents too.

Backup of DATA and CATALOGS: You can keep a copy on the disk itself / on removable storage.
Those two folders will present in installation directory of BE.
After upgrading to BE 2010, the old configuration will not change. But it is a precautionary measure to keep a copy of DATA and CATALOGS folders.

You will have to download BE2010 R2 its a 3.21GB file. Below is the link for R2.
https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=93355
After donwloading the ISO either burn it on the DVD or extract it.
Stop the SQL server BKUPEXEC service and make a copy of DATA & CATALOGS folder.
The above folders are located at X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec.
Run the setup.exe of BE2010R2 to perform inplace upgrade.
To play safe we need to take a backup of the 2 folder so that if anything goes wrong
during the upgrade we can rebuild the software.
The inplace upgrade will keep all the jobs and settings intact.
