VMware VMDK Backup

I have created a backup job & under the VMware section of the backup properties I have disabled GRT for files/folders as well as AD, Exchange and SQL.  When I run this job instead of backing up the .vmdk file it instead backs everything up to a .bkf file.  If I reenable just the AD, Exchange and SQL GRT it will backup the .vmdk file.  Does anyone know why this is?

When you target a backuip without GRT the data will be stored in the .bkf format

With GRT the data will be stored in the IMG folders.
