Variable Backup Speeds

Hi,

Can anyone tell me why the speed of my backup jobs can change from one night to the next ?

We have one backup job running overnight daily and one night it can backup and verify 160 Gig in 9 Hrs and the next night backup the same data but it takes 14 Hrs.

We are doing Full backups across 6 servers and the throughput speeds seem to drop for all servers. there is no one working during this time, so there is no other network traffic.

Please help !!!

Steve

Hello,

Backup performance depends on various factors, some of them are as follows:
A. Tape Drive used for backup (Tape drive or Autoloader) and the media.
B. Hardware or software compression used.
C. The device drivers, firmware for the backup device.
D. Local or remote network backup.
E. Antivirus option selected.
The following guidelines will be useful to improve backup throughput:
1. Make sure that the antivirus protection is disabled during the backup process.

2. Ensure that all the hardware devices are working properly. The firmware on the tape device is updated to the latest.

3. Ensure that there are no third party applications running during the backup process.

4. Download and install the latest VERITAS tape device drivers for Backup Exec v 10.0 using following link:
VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 10.0 - Device Driver Installer (20050315) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20050115) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only)

5. Refer to the following technotes in order to improve backup throughput:
