Verification Time

I'm running a backup of my Oracle database. I enabled the backup scanning by ticking DISPLAY PROGRESS INDICATORS FOR BACKUP JOBS at OPTIONS -> PREFERENCES so that I have an estimated time when my backup finishes. I also enabled VERIFY so that I would be sure that my data got backed up and written to tape properly.

The thing is... when the backup job finished backing up my Oracle which is 10GB (in the Job Activity) my VERIFY starts. The problem is that it is supposed to verify only 10GB since it is the size that it backed up but when I look at the Job Activity it is verifying more that 10GB of data.

Another weird thing is that when I look at the Job Activity, the ESTIMATED TIME REMAINING indicates something like 32312:10:18.

What is going on with my backup? Do I need to install a HotFix or a Patch for this?

Hello Xavier,

We suggest you uncheck the option display progress indicators, and turn off any antivirus software if running on your Oracle server.

One more thing, how much time does the Backup and Verify together take ?

Thankyou for the update.

Hello Chaitanya,

I need the progress indicator so that I can estimate when my backup finishes.

My backup of the 10GB Oracle database takes about 25minutes using a DLT VS80 tape drive. The verify takes 3.5hours. All in all the entire job finishes in 4hours.

Hi,

* Please check the media stats if there are any soft or hard Read/write errors on the media:

What are Soft write errors and Hard write errors and how are they displayed with VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Server?
http://support.veritas.com/docs/229641

* Also, update the drivers and the firmware of the drive.

Hello Asma,

As suggested, I've checked for Soft and Hard Write errors but found none. The drivers for the autoloader is up-to-date.
