We recently upgraded to backup exec 10.0 and are now having problems backing some things. in our previous version we were backing up our clusters over a 1 GB private network. Since the upgrade we can no longer backup the virtual servers. We receive the message below. Any help would be appreciated.

Job ended: Monday, March 21, 2005 at 11:09:13 AM

I have a similar problem. When I try to back up a virute server guest os with the remote agent, the network interfaces between host and guest die. once the job starts you can no longer communicate between guest and host. It seems something with the back up service is killing the network service.

Does anybody from Veritas have any comments for this?

1) Incase you are selecting specific network adapter then please change it to select "Use any available network route for remote agents not bound to network id"

Run the job and check the result. Incase it does not help, read the following resolution.

2 ) The backup of a remote Windows server fails with the above mentioned error if the backup exec server has a multiple NIC cards and the backup job is configured to use a specific NIC card.

The two NIC cards on the backup exec server may have different subnet mask.

This error appears in job log :

The Media Server was unable to connect to remote machine: SERVER1 using selected subnet: 192.168.0.0.

To solve this issue the vxmon on the remote server should be configured to advertise using the IP on the NIC for backup.
To advertise a remote server to media server follow these steps.

1. Open c:\program files\veritas\backup exec\RANT

2. Open vxmon.exe

3.Click on the advertising tab and select "Enable remote agent advertising".

4.Select IP address and type the IP address of the media server then click on the add button.
5.Click on the Add button then click on the OK button

6.Now the remote agent will advertise itself to the media server only to the specified IP address.
