What exactly does 'legacy' mean for an agent?

We're looking to hopefully integrate our AIX backups with BackupExec. 10d and 11d state that there is a legacy agent available.

What exactly does Legacy mean in this context? Is it fully supported? Will there be bug patches/fixes etc? Is it able to use all the features with 10d and 11d?

I'm assuming it is legacy because it has not been updated in a long time and presumably will not be updated in the future but still seems to work with 10d and 11d backup servers.

Can anyone clarify this?

Cheers

Steve

Hi,

As far as Unix and linux backups are concerned, "legacy agent" means the agent which is avalable for a "free" download.

The agent doesnt have the functionality of the RALUS agent-like backing up mount points and backups with legacy agent are known to be slower than those performed with RALUs agent.

Legacy agent has its own software compatibility, which can be referred to here:

ok... so it's pretty much "we know you exist but we don't really care. We'll give you just enough functionailty so that you'll want more and buy NetBackup." kind of thing.

Cheers,

Steve.

Actually Steve, Legacy in this case means it works. The RALUS Agent for Version 11 doesn't.
