Where to install the Backup Exec Agent for VMware

Hi,

I'm using VMware vSphere with some guest VMs.  But I'm not sure where to install the Backup Exec 2010 Agent for VMware.  I cannot find any documents on internet.  Any one kindly know the answer?

Hello,

There are typically 2 ways to install the Remote Agent for Windows. (Entering the appropriate license key on the BE media server, makes it an Agent for VMware)

Thanks, but I don't understand that Agent software is installed in host server (which is vSphere ESX), or installed in the VM (which would be Linux or Windows), or another machine using Windows?

I guest the software should not be installed in host server which is vSphere (Linux based).  I guess the software should not be installed in VM, since it can't backup currently using image itself. 

Am I correct?

The Agent for VMware is installed locally as a separate, add-on component of Backup Exec. You do not have to install the VMware Agent on the ESX host.

It means that the Agent for VMware is installed in the Windows (as a guest OS), and I can use Backup Exec server on another machine to control the VM image backup.  Is it true?

Here are the steps to be followed:

1) Install Backup Exec 2010 on a seperate Windows server. If you have Virtual Centre then you can install Backup Exec 2010 on that Virtual Center also.

2) Install the Licesne key for Backup Exec 2010 Agent for VMware in this installation of Backup Exec.

Now the ESX server and the guest VM will already be discovered in the selection list. Check out the following technotes for Requirements, Permissions, How To Backup/restore and also the GRT feature:

If I've 1 separate machine, and 2 identical ESX machines. Each ESX host contains 3 guest VMs running Windows Server, and all storage are on SAN storage.  All I need are:

1 x Backup Exec for Windows System  (to be installed in the separate server)
2 x Backup Exec Agent for VMware  (license keys for the separate server)
2 x Backup Exec Agent for Oracle (for DB)  (to be installed in each VM using Oracle)
6 x Backup Exec SAN Shared Storage Option  (to be installed in each VM using SAN storage)

Am I right?

You will not require " 6 x Backup Exec SAN Shared Storage Option  (to be installed in each VM using SAN storage"

SAN Storage option is only required if you a re sharing the Robotic Library which is connected on SAN.

To backup your Virtual Machine which are on SAN, using Backup Exec 2010 Agent for VMware you will not require the SAN Storage License.

But I'm not using robotic libraries (Library Expansion Option), but I'm using a SAN storage (SAN Shared Storage Option) to allow LAN-free backup.  If 6 VMs are sharing the SAN, do I need any license?
